After the diagnosis and the planning of the acute medical treatment of the neurological diseases, it should be evaluated by the physiotherapy and rehabilitation specialist. The patient can be included in the neurorehabilitation program in order to recover the lost functions or preserve the available functions. The goal is to recover the lost functionality and cognitive skills.

Special treatment methods taking all the physical and psychological factors with a comprehensive approach into consideration are implemented to resolve the problems of the patient.

Neurorehabilitation is an important component in the physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Drug treatment is the first option at the early phase of the majority of the neurological diseases for the control or treatment of the disease. However, certain functional disorders like gait problems, balance disorders, problems related to the hand and arm movements, pain, and tremor do usually not sufficiently respond to drug treatment. In these neurological disorders, a comprehensive neurorehabilitation program is necessary to resume the independent daily activities free of pain.

All neurological disorders with functional disturbances and pain benefit from the neurorehabilitation techniques, which are a main component of the physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

After the stroke due to the cerebral bleeding or vascular obstruction, brain injury and spinal cord injuries, the neurorehabilitation methods should be immediately implemented after the emergency medical and/or surgical intervention. In this group of patients, problems such as gait disturbances, impaired hand and arm movements, sitting and balance problems, speech and cognitive disorders, swallowing problems are common.

Tracheostomy may be needed in the majority of these patients in the early phase of the disease. Therefore, appropriate pulmonary rehabilitation should be considered. Then, the tracheostomy is removed. Meanwhile, a suitable swallowing test and thereafter swallowing rehabilitation may be necessary for the evaluation of the swallowing function.

Several treatment methods like robotic physiotherapy, zero-gravity gait training, computer-assisted and virtual-reality-assisted balance, and gait training, electrotherapy, special neurophysiological exercise program, manual therapy, medical massage are used for neurorehabilitation. During this period, a healthy state of mind is an important factor for the rehabilitation. Therefore, practices elevating the mood of the patient are needed. If necessary, psychiatric consultation for psychotherapeutic support should be provided.

Our robotic physiotherapy laboratories, in which virtual reality and augmented reality technologies are used, give service for the hand-arm rehabilitation, gait rehabilitation, and balance treatment.
